Lowell Holiday Tournament
The WA Boys Basketball Team dropped its first two games in the Greater Lowell Holiday Tournament and then came back to defeat Chelmsford.
In the opening game Westford was defeated 67-54 by Dracut High School. Fred Kell had a strong game with 21 points, 5 Rebounds, and 3 Steals. Westford closed the gap to 8 points midway through the 2nd half, but poor shooting by Westford and solid play by Dracut never let the Ghosts back into the game. "Fred had a nice game for us" commented Coach Ed Scollan but we missed some key shots in the 2nd half and Dracut did a solid job controlling the boards and hitting important shots down the stretch". Sean Goodrich (9 Points) and Tom McArdle (8 points) also supplied offense for the Ghosts.
Westford lost to Billerica in the second game, 59-53. Trent Western and Tom McArdle each had 17 points to lead the Ghost Attack. A 2nd half comeback cut Billerica's lead from 13 to 5, but the comeback stopped short. "Trent Western picked his game up in the 2nd half to help with the comeback" said WA Coach Ed Scollan "but we needed others to do the same". "It was frustrating not to get over the top in our comeback, but we needed to improve our overall shooting (17/48 for 35%) and keep our turnovers to a minimum against Billerica and we didn't do that" added Scollan.
The Westford Academy Boys basketball team won their final Lowell Tournament game 73-53 against Chelmsford High School. Senior Captain Fred Kell led all scorers with 27 points while adding 11 Rebounds, 6 Assists, and 4 Steals. Senior Captain Trent Western added 19 points and 6 Rebounds. Tom McArdle had 11 points while Steve Burndrett had 5 steals to spark the Ghost attack. "It was great to see Fred Kell have such a complete game" commented head coach Ed Scollan while "Trent's shooting in the first half gave us the offense we needed to pull ahead". "It was a team effort that was needed as we go back to DCL play on Friday" added Scollan who was very pleased with the rebound after the loss to Billerica on Saturday.
